We're here to help

Sometimes people are new at buying a puppy. Things come up and they don't really know who to ask a question to. We want to help you in any way that we can. I am not an expert but I do have over 16 years in the breeding business and are currently studying to be a veterinarian technician to further my ability to care for my Yorkies. I take the caring of an animal very serious and if I can help you with any question that you might have I will be more than happy to do so.
If you have a question or comment that you would like to send us, you may do so at talk2thepaw@yorkiesrule.us and we will answer your question and post it on this page for you to review and to maybe help other people with the raising of their puppy. If you are not a part of our Yorkie family that is o.k., we welcome all questions and would like to help you.
Greeneville,TN (Melinda) Question/Comment: " Hi, I did not buy one of your yorkies,I would have if I found your website 1st, But I would like to get some information about the new DRA registry out there? My Yorkie is AKC but I am looking for a male to breed her with could you tell me more about this registry, Thanks?

Hi Melinda-

Welcome to the website. It don't matter if you bought your yorkie from me or not, we like to hear from everyone, So welcome. In regards to the DRA registry. I did look into it and I also added them to the why AKC? page, so check that out too. I read their home page and they really don't care what you register? They state right on their website that they will register purebred dogs, exotic dogs (don't know what that means) and UNRECOGNIZABLE BREEDS, Now that struck me, I read that they don't guarantee that the dog THEY entered into their system is a true dog of that breed, They state that they don't guarantee that the dog is a purebred, healthy,or free of any disease, They state that the mother has to be registered with them when you breed her and that they don't care IF and WHO the dad is registered with? Also keep in mind IF you did get a puppy that is DRA registered, you CANNOT register it AKC, you can register it DRA but WHY? They charge $ 20.00 per dog to register them, $ 25.00 to register a litter

$75.00 to register a kennel name. Sounds to me like they are REALLY in it for the money, for 3 major reasons. 1) they don't care what the dog is, they will register it  2.) they wont guarantee that the dog is what the papers state it is. 3) They really wont guarantee anything, oh yes except that they will take your money and give you a piece of paper stating that a mixed breed that you decided to name will get a piece of paper stating that it is registered. WOW,that is not only sad but pathetic. Melinda, DONT GET A DRA puppy. APRI use to be the lowest quality of a registry but thanks to DRA they are not anymore. Also why did they change their name???? I am sorry But I would NOT pay a "registry" money if they really are not looking out for the puppy. they also have a section on their website that talks about Quality and Registration: knocking a purebred show dog, 1st of all it is OBVIOUS that NO ONE in the DRA registry has ANY CLUE about quality they are a backyard registry registering backyard dogs!

Sarasota, FL  (Tammy)  Question:  "I bought a Yorkshire Terrier from a lady in Sarasota, she told me that she would only be 3lbs and she is now 5lbs, How can you tell how big a Yorkshire terrier will get?"

Hi Tammy-

The truth is you really cant tell exactly how much the Yorkie will be when it is full grown, You can estimate the weight and size by how big mom and dad are. If you are buying a Yorkie, make sure that you see the mom and&;dad of the puppy, This is very important! You want to know how the puppy interacts with mom and dad and this will give you an idea on how the puppy will look when it is full grown and around the size the puppy will be. If the breeder will not let you see the mom and dad, or the mom and dad are not with the breeder, Be very careful when you purchase the yorkie, without seeing the parents, How do you know anything about the yorkie, more importantly how do you know it is a purebred yorkie? The rule of thumb is to take the weight of the Yorkshire terrier at 8 weeks and double it. that should give you the close weight size. My little girl yorkie for sale is at 1.9lbs so she should be around 4lbs.I hope that this helps you out.

Fort Myers, FL (Thomas) Comment: "I have looked at so many websites on Yorkies, But I can tell you that I think that your site is very well put together and easy to understand. My Girlfriend just bought a Yorkie from a lady here in Fort Myers. She is very cute, But dont have the small teddybear faces like yours.

Hi Thomas-

Thank you for the complement. We try to make it very simple so that people can understand without any problem. Yes my little babies have cute teddy-bear faces, But I am sure your little yorkie is very special to you and your girlfriend. Yorkshire terriers just have a way of winning anyone's heart.

Johnson City, TN (Angela) Question: "I just got a Yorkie and His ears are not up, he is 12 weeks of age and they are still down, What can I do to get them up, or are they going to stay that way?

Hi Angela,

Don't be discouraged yet. Most Yorkies ears are up by 8 weeks, but some take a little while longer and then some need some help. 1st you need to shave the top 1/3 to 1/2 of the hair off the ears, inside and out. Then get some masking tape for the ears, There are 2 ways that I have found to be very helpful. One is to fold the puppy ear as if you were closing the ear, so it looks like a 1/2 triangle, then apply the tape around the ear, Also you can use the masking tape to fold the tape together, then cut a triangle out of the tape. the tape should be sticking to itself. After cutting the triangle, put in on the inside of the puppies ear. then apply tape around the ear. If you use either way, the tape should be kept on for 3 days, unless it gets wet before then, then you have to change it out. after 3 days, take the tape off, if the puppies ears are standing leave the tape off, if not apply tape again for 3 days check again, keep doing it till the ears stand on their own. It sounds hard but you will get the hang of it soon. Have someone hold the puppy so that he/she don't squirm. Good luck!

Green Bay, WI (Corey) Question: Which is better to get my girlfriend a female or male? I have been looking at Yorkies for weeks, I read your website and I have only been looking at AKC yorkies, But I don't know which she would like better a female or male? Which one is better?

Hi Corey,

I get this question a lot. If you are buying this puppy for a lady, then as most women would agree, She would probably like a female better. Why? Ladies like something that they can dress and put bows in their hair. etc. Females have more of a motherly instinct, where as the male is more of a protector of the house. This is not to say that the male is not just as lovable as the female, because they are. But a women is drawn to the females. I guess its a girl thing. I would stick with a female for her. I have had single women buy puppies from me and they preferred the male something to protect the house. So it is a tuff call, But most women prefer the little girl.

Knoxville,TN (Angela) Question: What is a parti-colored Yorkshire Terrier? Does AKC even recognize this color? I have seen the parti-colored Yorkshire Terriers and think that they are beautiful , But when did they start breeding this color of a Yorkshire Terrier?

Hi Angela,

The parti-colored Yorkshire Terrier has been around for centuries. Yes AKC does recognize the Parti-colored Yorkshire Terrier and has given this color a designated number. They are very popular right now and everyone wants one. Please look at my Available Yorkies page and it will give you more detail.
